Seriously? Really? C’mon Now!

Really, Marissa Mayer, Newly hired and pregnant CEO of Yahoo, you’re going to fire Chief Marketing Officer, Mollie Spillman, while she was on vacation? Even if Mollie is doing a terrible, job you couldn’t “Mom-Up” and fire her face to face? Rumor is Marissa’s going to fire most of the current executive team within a year so but still, while vacation? What kind of message are you sending to the rest of the employees? Don’t go on vacation you may get canned while at Disney Land. So much for work life balance. Hey, Marissa aren’t you going on maternity leave soon? W-T-H!

This kind of behavior can be culture killers. The CEO is already new and whenever a new person comes aboard a company they tend to make changes, and the more powerful they are, the more changes they make. Change is good but often times it’s scary, so couple that with the fear of job loss and you have a very shaky foundation to build on. By terminating CMO while on vacation the other employees definitely see this and are concerned. Not too many people want to be fired during a weak economy especially from a company that many Americans would describe as a dream company.

C’mon man, seriously? Yunel Escobar, MLB player for the Toronto Blue Jays, you’re going to use eye-black, that stuff you put under your eyes to reduce glare, and write sexual slurs in Spanish? Seriously dude? You’re going to write “TU ERE MARICON” which translates to “You’re a f*ggot” on your face in front of a stadium of fans? Then you say that you didn’t realize it was offensive, really? Really? In his defense, nope…there is no defense, that’s just dumb. C’mon man really? You can’t be serious. I had a Columbian roommate in undergrad and let’s just say he taught us some Spanish, so I knew what “Maricon” meant therefore Yunel definitely knew exactly what it meant.

The Tornoto Blue Jays’ owners, general managers, and players have to deal with the negative attention that this has brought the team. There is already a huge fall-out from the LGBT community. The Blue Jays’ organization has suspended the player, docked his pay and sent the money to LGBT organizations. This just goes to show that not everyone has gotten the memo about tolerance, acceptance and cultural sensitivity. Or maybe it got lost in translation.

Every day human resources and management deal with scenarios (bonehead decisions that are embarrassing and cause for damage control) that make us scratch our heads and say “C’mon man, really? Seriously?”
